Treasure Coast Dive Forecast – March 2013

Love eating these pesky predators (lionfish) and suggest you do too. PHOTO CREDIT: StuartSCUBA.

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]ooler weather has come to the Treasure Coast and the Palm Beaches. Along with this drop in temperature cobia have started hanging around closer to shore and have been great table fare. Remember that there is only a few weeks left to lobster season and the ones we are seeing are very nice in size. On the deep ledges we are finding lionfish of over 15 inches!

I had a very nice dinner last week of lionfish grilled over onions in a caper and lemon sauce. Love eating those pesky predators and suggest you do to.

While it is still not season we are also seeing large number of good sized gag and black grouper. You might want to get ready for that season which will be opening shortly.

We have noticed that our shark population has been getting a bit frisky with the hunters. Remember that it is us that have trained them to approach us for an easy lunch of the fish we have caught. Sharks are our apex predator and a great treat to see. They belong in the area that we fish in and we do not. We are their guests. Let’s try to discourage the free lunch mentality we have created with them and send up our catches to the surface and on the boat as quickly as we can. While it is always a treat to see these magnificent creatures we do not need to cause problems by cleaning our fish underwater or shooting an amberjack just to see if they can take it off the spear shaft. We create a problem and then blame the shark.

Hope to see you under the boat and please come dive with us or any of the other fine boats on the Treasure Coast or Palm Beach County.
