Upper Pere Marquette Fishing Report: July 2014

Trout season is in high gear on the Pere Marquette River. We saw a lot of Drakes and Sulphurs at the end of May through early June. With so many bugs, the trout were getting full and becoming a little picky at the buffet line. There was more sporadic feeding taking place with the bigger fish. The last couple weeks the bugs were not as thick, as it became cooler in the mornings and evenings. So the window of fishing has been a little shorter. Look for the fishing to really heat up this month and into August.

Early July should start to bring out Michigan’s biggest mayflies, the Hex’s. We will just need the warmer days and nights to get them hatching. Warmer nights also mean that it’s time to go on the hunt with giant mouse patterns in hopes to rolling a giant brown trout. July and August provide great daytime fishing. Casting large Hopper’s, Ant’s, and other terrestrial patterns along the banks can be really effective. For more up-to-date reports don’t forget to check out outfittersnorth.com. Enjoy the summer and remember the bug spray, skeeters are horrible this year.
