Upper Pere Marquette: June 2014

upper-pere-marquette-report

Spring has finally arrived on the banks of the Pere Marquette River. The steelhead run is about over, with many fish now heading back out to spend the summer in Lake Michigan. It’s been a wet spring so far with record water levels, and a river that’s still at a good level and color. This has created ideal streamer fishing conditions for browns and rainbows. The salmon parr have hatched so the bigger trout are keying in on this easy meal ticket. For flies, try baitfish patterns to mimic small salmon in colors of olive and white. On the sunny days and as the water warms, start looking for some dry fly opportunities. Hendrickson’s are starting to come off in the mid-afternoons, along with small Stone Flies, and even a few Blue Winged Olives on the cloudy days.

As spring slowly turns into summer we should start seeing some more dry fly fishing on the Pere Marquette River. Sulphurs should start hatching the end of this month. With gray drakes taking the runner up position throughout the early parts of June. Before you go out be sure to check www.outfittersnorth.com for the most up-to-date river information.
