Venice Inshore Fishing Forecast: July 2013

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Miss. River is at 12.5 now and falling slowly. I have been getting questions on the effects of the high river on the fishing. The good thing about a high river is that it limits where fish can go. The high river pushes fresh water down the canals, leaving enough clean salt water for the fish to occupy only in certain areas. Once you locate these areas, it should be fairly easy to fill up your ice chest.

It’s July and it’s hot, but that hasn’t stopped the redfish bite. Redfish have been pretty thick.
Catching 50-100 per day has been fairly common. South Pass, Garden Island and Redfish Bay have been consistent for clean water and lots of redfish. Gulps, plastic and shrimp under a cork have been the ticket for good reds.

Trout have been hit or miss. We are still catching a few around the beaches of South Pass, the block 69 area and Pass a Loutre. If your going after trout it’s almost a must to have live shrimp Carolina rigged or under a cork. Remember: as the temperature begins to heat up, the early morning bite becomes more important. The fish become less active as the water temperature rises. They don’t like the heat much more than we do.
