Waterproof Apparel For All Seasons

When we think about apparel, most of the time we think about clothes, but let’s talk a little about waterproof apparel. Waterproof apparel can come in a variety of forms from bibs to jackets to waders and can be used in a lot of situations.

Waterproof apparel is extremely useful on the water, whether you are inland or offshore. And it’s not only for winter use. There are many times, even in the summer, that a squall line or a severe thunderstorm is between where you are and where you are going. If you don’t have a waterproof jacket, and possibly a couple extras for clients or friends, then it can be miserable.

Right now, and all the way until late May, there will be cold fronts, squall lines and extreme weather, and a waterproof jacket that is built right can be a lifesaver. I don’t get on the water this time of year without my wading jacket. Why a wading jacket? Because the construction methods for wading jackets are designed to keep water out of everywhere. The better ones will have neoprene wrist cuffs that you can cinch closed. Other items to look for are fleece neck liners for those times when you are driving into a rainstorm. If you are fishing in wet and cold conditions, having that fleece collar adds a level of comfort and warmth that will allow you to stay on the water until the bite happens.

Waterproof zippers are also important. Have you ever been in a torrential downpour and experienced water coming into your windbreaker or your rain jacket through the zipper. It’s a real letdown. Similarly, having sealed seams where water collects or drips, such as at the elbows or armpits, where the seams meet is another location where water can seep in. It may not be enough to drench you, but that small breach in your armor can make you cold and at a minimum uncomfortable. That is going to cut the trip short or make it miserable.

I can tell you, when you buy quality, well-designed jackets, bibs, or waders, and your first trip out you get to test it in extreme weather conditions and find it impenetrable, that’s going to allow you to relax. You’re going to have better blood flow and circulation, and that adds to your warmth and enjoyment.

On the other side of the warmth issue is getting too hot. Spring is upon us, yet we’ll still have some cold fronts and some real warm ups. Armpit vents that don’t leak allow you to keep the jacket on to block the wind and still allow you to feel comfortable. I don’t go anywhere without my Simms jacket, and I keep my waders ready to go as well. Stay warm, and dry!
