Weekly Okeechobee Fishing Report: 10/2/2015

Yesterday was my first weekly report and I had yet to reach the south end of Lake Okeechobee. So here is the close-out of the report.

Lakeport-Harney Pond: Large bass are highly scattered. Most bass are small and probably in the 2013 & 2014 brood years. Being young they’re eager to feed on just about anything. Specks are moving in and a few bag limits are being caught. Minnows with jigs are producing well. The Bluegill bite is just about over. Mornings and late evening have been the best times.

Clewiston: Michael Krause who works out of Roland Martin’s Marine Center reports the high water is scattering the bass and offshore holding areas are thinning out. The early morning bite remains the best with swim baits, topwater frogs, and other surface artificials doing well. Depending on sunlight conditions, the morning bite can be over by 9:30-10:00:am after which you change to Senko or creature baits and work the weed beds. Specks are loading into the Rim Canal with schools concentrating near moving water which tends to be cooler water. The Moore Haven area has been especially active for Specks.

Belle Glade: At Slim’s Fish Camp they report Specks are showing up in numbers. Minnows are the favorite for these slabs. Bluegills are still available with red worms and crickets being the preferred baits. As for bass, like elsewhere on the lake the high water has scattered the bass. Shiners are still producing the best results. For fishermen preferring artificials, early mornings and late evenings remain the best times of the day.

Canal Point: The high water has impacted all species. Specks have yet to show up in numbers and bass remain scattered.

For those venturing to Clewiston this weekend, be prepared for tough launching and parking. The Roland Martin Marine Center Classic is this weekend. The winner of this 2-day event takes home a $ 10,000 payout with 2nd place taking home a $ 4,000 payout. With these numbers, this makes the Roland Martin Marine Center Series one of the premier events on the Big ‘O’. On Sunday the South End Challenge comes to town for even more boats coming out of the lock.

With the weatherman forecasting great conditions, it’s time to get a line wet.
