Why Knot Fishing

By Joe Gugino

The weather is getting nicer, and it’s time to get out there and fish! I am anxiously awaiting the return of the striped bass to the North Shore, but until then there many opportunities to hit freshwater for many different species.

March was an awesome month for fishing events. Our first annual March of Fly Fishing featured two great fly tying nights at Capefish in Wenham, MA, our Fly Fishing Night at Red’s Kitchen + Tavern in Peabody, MA, and the Fly Fishing Film Tour, co-hosted with Cheeky Fishing at the Greatest Bar in Boston.

Also, in March my fellow Why Knot Fishing co-founder Matt Zimmermann was lucky enough to go on an exotic fishing trip to Costa Rica with Tom Enderlin of Release Fly Travel. Matt went with his brother Dan and his friend Brendan Eppley, and they were able to all catch their first roosterfish, as well as jacks, bluefin trevally, and sailfish!  They used both spin gear and flies from shore and boat, and had great luck with the white Al Gag’s Whip-It Fish. Head over to www.whyknotfishing.com to read some more about their awesome adventure.

In April we are looking forward to our Kayak & SUP Fishing night co-hosted by Little Harbor Boathouse on Wednesday April 20th at Red’s Kitchen & Tavern. We will be displaying a rigged Hobie Kayak as well as our new LIVE Watersports SUP.  We will be talking about different kayak and SUP fishing strategies, and our awesome kayak and SUP fishing opportunities that we will be offering this summer.

As I mentioned before, we encourage you to get out on the freshwater this month, but be careful if you are on a kayak! We wear life jackets all summer long, and it is important do so with the frigid water temps. Even though the air temperature may be warming up, the water is still very cold.  Dress properly with a dry suit, or try pants and a jacket and it is smart to go with a friend as well.

We look forward to seeing you at our Kayak & SUP Fishing night, and maybe on the water as well.  The stripers will be here soon!
