Gulf of Nicoya Fishing Report and Forecast April and May 2016

Whitefin corvina taken on a jig

Fishing has been sporadic but we have managed to make some very good roosterfish catches with some mackerels, corvinas, snapper, trevallys and jacks in the mix. Bait has been scarce making live baiting difficult.

April and May means that the dry season is at its peak and May means rainy season. April is a very clear water month and the fish tend to be deeper. Roosters, groupers and snappers are around but not in large numbers. Corvinas can also be tricked on live bait or jigs. If conditions are right there can be some smaller mahi in the gulf as well.

By mid-May the rainy season should be in progress meaning greener coastal water, more bait and more fish. Look for schools of jacks and larger numbers of roosterfish to be around. The popper fishing should start picking up with chances at some good cuberas around the islands as well.
