Freshwater Report By: Ron Schelfo

Lake Alfred – Auburndale – Winter Haven areas

Merry Christmas! Reports of limits and good size speckled perch have been coming in from all over Polk County.  This has been a fantastic year for spec fishing, and we are currently prime-time from now through April.  Here in Lake Alfred, we are getting great reports of limits on one pound and larger from Lakes Rochelle, Alfred and Haines.  Our local anglers are having best results using live minnows with yellow jigs.  We are also seeing many bass in the 3 to 5-pound range–primarily being caught on lipless crank baits and chatter baits.  The Auburndale area reports excellent bass and spec fishing on Lakes Juliana and Ariana. The best spec results on Lake Ariana have been night-time fishing from the pier at Max Beach using live minnows.

Heading over to the South Winter Haven Chain of lakes, our best reporting lakes are Cannon, Shipp, Howard and May fishing by boat, from the piers or in the canals.  As the temperatures drop, the shallow water in the canals cools faster making it an ideal environment for spec fishing.

Year after year, with the cooler temperatures and higher water levels, Central Florida offers some of the very best fresh water fishing in Florida!

The 20th season of Ron’s Tackle Box Weekly Bass Tournaments has now ended.  Our Bass Tournaments, whether weekly or special events, provide for great fishing and fun! Stay tuned for future developments
