July is here and that means that we have made it through the first half of 2020. It’s anyone’s guess as to what the second half of the year will bring us. Unfortunately, most of what is happening across South Florida and the world for that matter, is out of our control. Fortunately, we can control how we react to what does happen. Remember that it doesn’t cost anything to be kind. Kindness is infectious and can go a long way in improving someone’s day. Go out of your way to be kind and our world will become a better place.
With temperatures climbing to the hottest we’ll feel all year, July is a great time for night snapper fishing. I like to leave the dock late in the afternoon and head offshore to hunt for dolphin for a few hours. As the sun begins to set, I’ll run back inshore to one of our artificial reefs and set up in 60 to 80 feet, drop the anchor up current from the spot and begin to chum. It’s important to use a chum bag with the larger holes to get your slick going. Use 12 to 15 pound spinning outfits with 3 to 5 feet of 20 pound fluorocarbon leader tied to a 1/0 circle hook or yellowtail jig on the business end. I like to use live shrimp for bait when available, but a variety of cut bait like ballyhoo or bonito will do the trick.
