What started as a day of fishing in the Florida Keys quickly became a fight for survival for a Silver Springs angler.
David Daniel, 43, was fishing near a sandbar off Boca Grande Key on August 23 when he spotted a shark moving through the shallow water. The shark, which Daniel estimated at roughly six to seven feet long, appeared to be a nurse shark.
Daniel continued fishing, but the encounter took a terrifying turn when the shark suddenly changed direction and charged.
The shark bit down on the top of Daniel’s foot before releasing him.
At first, Daniel was focused on getting out of the water. Then he looked down and realized just how serious the injury was.
There was blood everywhere.
Daniel was alone on the beach for a period of time and knew he needed help quickly. Fortunately, a nearby boat was close enough for its occupants to see what had happened. Several of the people aboard had medical training, including nurses and emergency medical personnel.
They immediately went to Daniel and began treating the injury, working to control the bleeding while emergency responders were contacted.
Their quick response proved critical.
The U.S. Coast Guard eventually transported Daniel for emergency medical care. He was later airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami-Dade County, where surgeons performed two operations to repair the extensive damage to his foot and leg.
Daniel was released from the hospital on August 26 and returned home, but his recovery will be a long one. He is expected to spend weeks unable to walk and will require extensive physical therapy.
For an angler, being forced off the water is difficult enough. Having your life changed in a matter of seconds is something entirely different.
Daniel says the experience has given him a new appreciation for how quickly circumstances can change on the water—and how important it is to have people nearby who know what to do in an emergency.
He also credits the strangers who came to his aid with helping save his life.
The incident is another reminder that even experienced anglers need to respect the environment around them. Florida’s waters are home to an incredible variety of wildlife, and encounters with sharks are a natural part of spending time in those waters.
Most encounters never become dangerous. But when something does go wrong, preparation, quick thinking and having someone nearby can make all the difference.
Daniel now faces a difficult road back. But after surviving a potentially fatal shark attack, getting home to his family and beginning the recovery process is a victory in itself.
For an angler who went out expecting another day on the water, it was a reminder that every day spent fishing is one worth appreciating.
