Some fishing records are impressive because of the size of the fish. Others stand out because of the tackle used to land them. Mark Hope’s incredible barramundi is a combination of both.
While fishing from his kayak on Lake Tinaroo in Queensland, Australia, Hope was trolling a 6-inch Z-Man Swimmer when a massive barramundi struck. The fish weighed an astounding 23.7 kilograms (52 pounds, 3 ounces), yet Hope was targeting it on just 1-kg (2-pound) line.
The powerful barramundi put the light tackle to the ultimate test, repeatedly launching from the water during an intense 20-minute battle. Fishing from a kayak added another challenge as Hope worked to keep the fish under control without giving it an opportunity to break the line.
Eventually, Hope was able to land the giant fish, securing the IGFA Men’s 1-kg (2 lb) Line Class World Record for barramundi.
The catch remains one of the most remarkable examples of light-tackle fishing, especially considering the size and power of barramundi. Hope’s record is even more impressive when considering his success with the species over the years. He continues to hold five of the 13 IGFA Men’s Line Class World Records for barramundi.
A 52-pound barramundi is an impressive fish by any standard. Catching one from a kayak on 2-pound line makes Hope’s achievement truly extraordinary.
