Angler Brandon McGirl and charter captain Jamie Savage landed a massive 1,116-pound Atlantic bluefin tuna during an overnight fishing trip out of Rye Harbor, New Hampshire, in early October. The fish measured 114 inches long and was caught using live squid after approximately 17 hours of fishing.
The enormous tuna exceeded New Hampshire’s previous state record of 962 pounds, set in 2013. However, because the fish was caught approximately 10 miles offshore, outside the waters required for state-record eligibility, it will not officially claim the title.
Despite missing the record book, the catch was an extraordinary accomplishment. The tuna was so large that the crew could not lift it aboard their boat and had to return to the harbor for a heavy-duty hoist to bring it ashore.
