Surfers in the Bahamas are hoping their New Year’s wish comes true this January and the wind stops. Since October, the wind has blown from a north-northeasterly direction most of the time, and hard. We’re talking 12 to15 knots plus. Since a majority of breaks in the Bahamas need wind somewhere from the other direction, it has not meant good surfing conditions. When commenting on whether the abnormally blustery weather was due to ‘El Nino’ one local surfer joked it was more ‘El Windo’. The historic wave and wind data points to January being one of our best months for sizeable surf and favorable winds and anyone who’s been here in January can attest to that. If and when the wind does let up, the collective sigh of relief from surfers will be felt from Walker’s Cay to Mayaguana. Now’s the time a good 3/2 mm wetsuit comes in handy. Or better yet, for those coming from colder climes, enjoy the mid-70 degree water in just your boardshorts. It’s still the Bahamas after all. The Eleuthera Surf Club hosts its First-Ever Contest this winter. The waiting period is set for December 19-January 6 to coincide with the youngster’s school holidays. Surfers are welcome to register for the beginner heats or the Expression Session for advanced surfers. There will also be a beach BBQ fundraiser.
