[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he month of March already! March madness is in the air. The fish are wanting to transition into the coming spring time patterns, but there is still plenty of cold muddy water pouring out of the Mobile river. March can usually be one of the harder months to fish. The trout seem to dissapear for days on before you can get on a good bite. The good thing is the sheepshead are just piling up around any structure with a good barnacle presence on it.
The trout depending on the water temps will still be hunkering down deep in the Mobile river. I haven’t heard of any good consistent reports coming from Dog river or Theodore Industrial canal. The only constant is the changing weather. The best pattern is sticking to throwing grubs and slow bouncing the bottoms in the rivers or live shrimp fished under a slip cork.
You need to find a starting depth and just experiment until you find where the fish may be suspended. Rootbeer or chartruese colored grubs are my personal choice to use this time of the year. And just remember, just because the water looks stained or slightly muddy on top, doesn’t mean it’s that way down below. So don’t hesitate to try a few cast to see if any trout or a redfish might be willing to surprise you.
The redfish bite down along the coast is still doing good. Good numbers of slot reds are being caught fishing the mouths of little creeks and bayous. Live shrimp or a Berkley Gulp under a popping cork has been the most consistent choice. Hope to see ya on the water!!
