A Stellar Day

A redfish double!

I had an absolutely stellar day with Riccardo and his son Riccardo Jr. flyfishing the park. We honestly had what I would have to rate as one of my top days on the water, ever. We launched in the dark and as the sun was coming up over us, we silently poled across a slick calm flat surrounded by dozens of gulls, cormorants, and pelicans diving on freshly hatched shrimp and other thousands of small baits. We could see massive schools of baby tarpon rolling and crushing these baits, and we wasted no time hooking fish on every single cast for the first hour, jumping and breaking fish off primarily in the 15-25 lb class, with a few that surprised us and were in the 40-75 lb range. After having our fun with those fish, we went and caught an absolute mess of Seatrout out of potholes, which the guys loved since it’s not often that you catch quality fish on flyrods on every single cast. We ended our day sightfishing Snook and Redfish up in some super shallow water. The sheer numbers of fish we caught were pretty incredible, not to mention we were off the water by noon, but overall the best part was just spending an awesome morning with two really cool guys and making memories that will last a lifetime.
