Adventures in Boating – Part 3

by Tiffany Packard

Adventures in boating, day #2…just me and the spouse go for a day on the water with our 90 lb. Doberman, complete with a finding nemo life vest! We venture a bit farther this day and try our luck around MATLACHA Pass. First, the winding channel is NOT easy to see AND was it red on the right or green? Eh, no matter we just stay close to the markers when we see them and should be safe enough, right? Um, no. Not even close.

Low tide sand bar became our new fishing hole for the day, a mere 10 feet to the right of a green channel marker. The first boater that stopped asked if we had a phone and was on his way. The 2nd concerned citizen actually pulled us off the sand bar, but made us trim the motor, much to my dismay (it hasn’t been fixed yet, remember?) but what choice did we have? Again, the trim would not go down. So, we are dead in the water with the prop COMPLETELY out of the water and we cannot move. 3rd concerned citizen was a MarineMax employee and knew of a way to manually reset the trim…. if only we had a flat head screwdriver-IF ONLY…I tried my Swiss army tool, my Leatherman, the fish unhooker thingy, ANYTHING to turn this screw that probably had not been turned since the motor came off the assembly line 20 years ago-basically NOT HAPPENING. So, the final and 4th fisherman and his son in a flats boat approached as I yelled across the waterway to see if they had a flathead screwdriver. Phillips head was all he could find…BUT it was a reversible one so we were in luck! FINALLY, we were on our way again MUCH to my relief!

So, we made it home safe and sound. I will finish my online safety course and hopefully my 4thtrip will be the easy one! Kill switch, broken trim & sand bars will not keep me away!
