Kayaking Adventure in the Chandeleur Islands

The deep rumble of the engines aboard the Double Trouble made me realize that one of my long-time kayak fishing dreams was finally coming true. We were headed out for two days of kayak fishing at the Chandeleur Islands. Located 35 miles off the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi, this fast disappearing chain of barrier islands has attained an almost mythical reputation for fantastic fishing.

Fishing Community Supports Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival

The 16th Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival in Brevard County, FL, scheduled for January 23-28, 2013, has long been an event supported by Coastal Angler Magazine. Rodney Smith, CAM founder and Anglers for Conservation advocate, will be doing classroom presentations from his new book, Enjoying Life on the Indian River Lagoon Coast with book-signings to follow.

Hooking Blue Marlin in the Gulf off Venice, Louisiana

If you are saltwater fishing in blue water and live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast there’s two choices. Either you ride or drive to the blue water. Obviously, if the vessel is a sport fisher the choice has been made in advance, but if your boat can be trailered, well then I believe the term is road trip. In most cases, either way, the trip is going to cost about three hours of drive/ride time.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter off San Benitos Island

The 22 anglers who headed out aboard Captain Art Taylor’s Searcher out of Fisherman’s Landing for a late-September six-day Penn Fishing University long range adventure found tuna and yellowtail in abundance, along with dorado, and even a “once in a lifetime” encounter with a huge group of sperm whales.

Winter Wading Tactics

With fall finally upon us, here in Florida, we find ourselves out of our fishing kayaks as much as we are in them. Many days only using the kayaks as portage to the knee deep grass flats littered with potholes that are prime for wade fishing.

Cast Your Bread Upon the Water

Few species can resist the natural aroma and tasty tidbits that signal a free lunch. Chumming not only attracts fish, it also stimulates their desire to feed. Competition in a chum slick makes fish more aggressive and they often race each other from one piece of chum to the next.

Fishing the Warm Weather States

For many families, some part of the late fall and winter involves a trip to the south. It might be to Disney Land or Disney World, depending upon where you live. It might involve the several Gulf States trying still to recover and rebuild finances and resort travel from the BP oil blow out.

Graham County’s Snowbird Creek Has It All

Snowbird Creek, and its main tributary Big Snowbird Creek, are places fly anglers could spend days exploring and still leave water untouched. On its top end, Big Snowbird is one of the largest remaining flows populated with native southern Appalachian brook trout. On its lower end, near its mouth at Lake Santeetlah, Snowbird plays host to an annual migration of lake-run rainbows that reach lengths well in excess of 20 inches.
