Backcountry Culture Fishing in October

by Capt. Justin Napior

Happy October everyone! I’ve got something a little different this month. I wanted to share a great little fishing story about surrounding yourself with good people that share the same passion for fishing. It started with my birthday, which was back in Aug. and fell on a Wednesday. Two of my good fishing buddies Will and Jared asked me what my plans were for my birthday, I told them I’m definitely going tarpon fishing!  Its my favorite fish to catch and I can’t get enough. I had my boat ready to go after work when my buddy Jared called and said I’ve already got my boat in the water, just meet us at the ramp! I thought to myself, awesome! Its rare I get to go on someone’s boat. Obviously, I offered to toss in gas money and help clean the boat after, that’s just proper etiquette. So, I get to the ramp, Jared has the boat ready and my buddy Will shows up after running a charter that day with a live well full of bait! I felt spoiled at this point, I just had to hop on the boat and fish! The first spot we stopped at we found the perfect size tarpon rolling. Most were around the 30lb mark, we call those “fun size”. After a few small reds and snook, I hook up on a nice tarpon! He comes flying out of the water doing back flips and all three of us start yelling like kids! After a fun fight we land him and I got my birthday tarpon. Jared was prepared with the birthday hats for the picture!

I must have had the birthday luck on my side that evening because we ended up having a killer night of fishing! Landing 6 tarpon, big tripletails, redfish, snook and Jared completing the grand slam with a nice sea trout!

After about a dozen tarpon in the air, it was getting late and we left them chewing. What a night fellas. Moral of the story, surround yourself with good fishing buddies! You can follow Will on Instagram @willbearinthewoods and you can follow Jared @bbc_Ini_charters. Till next time tight lines everybody!
