Capt. Travis Freeman
Hello everyone. Captain Travis Freeman here owner and operator of Steady Fishing Charters out of Everglades City & Chokoloskee, FL and I just wanted to let everyone know that snook season is officially here! Our spring season is starting out with a bang, like it usually does, March in the Everglades! The water is warming up every day, and with that being said the fish are very active and they are moving constantly. Iâm starting to see more and more white bait like pilchards, finger mullet and thread fin. I have been catching a lot of bigger slot snook and oversized slot snook in the backcountry and bays of the 10,000 islands, but that doesnât mean that you canât catch a few slabs in the passes and rivers as well. Casting a soft jerk bait or using live shrimp and or live white bait 3â to 4â long. On a popping cork and or on the bottom with 1oz weight to hold your live bait down a little deeper. That is what I fish with this time of the year and it works great, as far as catching big snook. Redfish are still all over the place along the near shores of the gulf and up the rivers and passes of the Everglades. Live shrimp with about 3ft of 40-pound test leader or a white buck tail jig works great for redfish this time of the year also.
Sea trout are still feeding like they always do down here. They are super easy and fun to catch. Definitely always a fun fish for the kids to catch and we always end up with some meat and an even better story for dinner. Plus, the kids can say, âHey I caught those troutâ, as your eating them for supper. Usually finding them in the grass flats on the outside islands or the near shores of the Gulf of Mexico, I always just cast a jig or I will fish a popping cork with about 3ft of 40-pound test leader with the cork just above the leader. Live or dead shrimp seem to always get the job done for me. Remember our spring snook season will only be open March and April, so be sure to give us a call @239-285-2971 or simply book your bucket list fishing trip with us at Steadyfishingcharters.com
