On a scale of 1 to 10, I give June a 12. The near-shore reefs will be at their best this month. Since they are so close to the launches, fish them at first light or sundown. Look for huge speckled trout, and epic numbers of white trout. Use live bait to find the fish, and switch to the plastics (under popping corks or tight lined) to work on them.
Look for stable weather, calm seas and great fishing. We will be spending most of our trips in the Biloxi Marsh, from Isle Au Pitre to Comfort Island. Diving birds in the early morning should provide all the trout you would ever need. A double rig, tight lined will really load the boat. Switch to this rig on every cast.
The oyster reefs in an around Isle Au Pitre will be on fire on the days before and after the new and full moon. Live shrimp and croakers on carolina rigs will get the big trout there. If you do not get a bite or see bait in the area you are fishing, move. The fishing is too good in June to burn day light waiting on a bite.
If you can stand the horse flies, the red fishing will be off the charts in June. Reds will be cruising banks looking for bait (shrimp, crabs and minnows). Watch for tails, wakes or fleeing bait fish. Spinner baits, top water and spoons will all draw strikes. The big sharks will be in full force in June. Fish the deepest water you can find (ship channels) for the big bulls and black tips.
Chumming will keep the fish around the boat and on your baits. Warm, calm water will bring in some incredible triple tail fishing along the entire MS Gulf Coast. Any floating object is worth a once over. Throwing a live shrimp to a triple tail is like air to an astronaut: they gotta have it.
Leave early, be courteous to the numerous other boaters and bring a kid fishing. June is what we fisherman wait for all year, so enjoy it. As always, have fun and be safe.
