Biloxi Marsh Fishing Report: April 2014

Capt. Sonny Schindler

Here we go…

April is what we all have been waiting for! Historically, April is pleasant temperatures, and great fishing. The first few weeks of April we will be working the near shore reefs and bridges. The puppy drum and big black drum will be thick as thieves on these structures. we are usually treated to a few reds, trout, flounder and sheepshead as well. A simple Carolina rig with some live or dead shrimp is all it takes. Just be ready for a battle royal, some of the black drum can and will be pushing 40 lbs!

Later in April we will be working the LA Marsh for speckled trout and reds. with the water temps climbing to the magic 70-72 degree range, look for the trout fishing to bust wide freaking open. early morning trout bites the last two weeks of April should be incredible. Look for moving points of water with bait over shells for the best results. Don’t be afraid to throw the top water baits either. Live bait under a Boat Monkey Popping Cork or on a Carolina rig will draw the most strikes.

Big bulls and healthy slot reds will be cruising the shore lines all month long. A well placed spinner bait along the bank will get it done.

We have seen triple tail in April, so keep an eye out. They usually come in with sargassum grass or offshore debris with the south winds.

We are coming off a long winter, so enjoy April. It is a great time of year to be on the water with friends and family, both young an old. As always, have fun and be safe.
