Birthday Mahi and a Personal Best!!

Tom McKelvey caught this 40 pounds, 55″ x 27″. Mahi-Mahi in FLORAL PARK.

This is a 40lb Mahi, weighed on an 80lb Boga Grip.
It measured 55” long and 27 1/2” around the head.
It was caught on, 3/21/18, while kite fishing on the Imagos with Captain Chris Christian.
It hit a medium size blue runner, on the starboard long line.
The fish immediately “greyhounded” toward the boat and was lit up fluorescent baby blue, quite a sight to see!
About 15 seconds later a 90b Sailfish hit a cigar minnow, on the starboard middle line.
This made it great fun as Sue and I were the only two anglers on board.
The Mahi jumped over the line attached to the Sailfish, which was now off the port side.
We were using light line, 20lb Berkley Pro Spec with 30lb Fluorocarbon leader and light wire circle hooks, so I couldn’t put too much pressure on the fish.
Capt. Chris gaffed the fish after a 13 minute battle, that included a visit from an inquisitive shark.
What a great birthday present, thank you Sue! Even better than it being a birthday present, was the 12” of wet heavy snow back home that I did NOT have to shovel.
