Around The World For August Blues
For some destinations around the world, this time of year is the heart of marlin season. The following is a quick list of some of the top spots for August.
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico – At the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas has striped marlin year-round, but August is the heart of the season for black and blue marlin, along with Pacific sailfish.
Cape Verde – This republic off the coast of north Africa is a series of 10 volcanic islands 350 miles out in the Atlantic. Cape Verde is famous for multiple bites from blues in a day, with no standard size. It could be a 300-pounder, but it could also be a fish of 1,000 pounds or more.
Madeira, Portugal – Less than 400 miles off the coast in the North Atlantic, this Portuguese archipelego is a great place to go for huge blue marlin, but don’t go expecting a bunch of bites. You’ll be fishing for one big bite. The average fish is in the 600- to 700-pound range.
Kona, Hawaii – If you’re looking for a big Pacific blue marlin, May through August is the best time of year to fish the Kona coast of the big island. Although other billfish might not be present this time of year, late summer is also the best time for ono and yellowfin tuna.
Caribbean – If action is what you’re after, numbers of smaller fish with a chance at a big one are available at St. Thomas, USVI, or off Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Less than 100 miles across the Puerto Rican Trench separates these two destinations. And even though the trench marks the division between the Atlantic and the Caribbean, they are similar fisheries with consistent action for 300- to 500-pound blues this time of year.
