Burton Forecast: Sept 2013

By Capt Wes Carlton
Water level: 1 foot down Clarity: Stained Water Temp: 75 degrees Brown Trout: The brown trout are congregated in groups on the south end of the lake. These fish are on a 30- to 50-foot bottom. Try trolling over them with 3-inch gold spoon or a Spro McStick in a herring color. We have been trolling around 3 mph and making small sharp turns while trolling. These fish should hold at these depths for the next couple of weeks. Bass: The spotted and largemouth bass have been biting well. We have caught some really nice fish this week on a drop-shot rig. This technique seems to be working best. Use a Robo Worm in morning dawn color or a small white Fluke Jr. on the drop-shot rig. Some of these bites are very subtle, so be patient and make sure the fish has the bait before you set the hook. Yellow Perch: The drop-shot rig has been working best. We have been catching some really big yellow perch this year. This week we have seen five fish at the 2-pound mark. Fishing night crawlers and minnows works best. The drop-shot rig is my choice when it comes to artificial baits. Use the same baits as you would when bass fishing, a Robo Worm or Fluke Jr. Walleye: They are 60 to 80 feet deep. Good luck. Catching these fish this time of year is easier at night with live bait.
