Camping for Queens

by Capt. Christina

May in Naples is a start to the slowdown of our busy tourist season, usually beginning with the Naples tradition of the Great Dock Canoe Races. Every year Naples has an end of season celebration that starts with the races Saturday morning and usually most boats end up down on Keeywadin Island. This is by no means the end of fishing in Naples. Here we are lucky to have a year-round bite. We are participating in the Spring Classic for biggest snook, hopefully we can get one to chew tournament day. Another good sign is the snook lights have been full lately, you see all sizes in the shadows.

Last month we finally got to do some camping, which for avid fishermen this means night fishing as well. We parked at a mangrove location where you can cross over to the beach on the front side. Once we set up camp it was time for rods in the water. We got a few ladyfish off the beach and set one out. After about twenty minutes we were into our first fish which happened to be a nice shark. Once getting him measured and unhooked he was set free unharmed. We always are looking out for the best interest for the fish and getting them back into their environment as quickly as possible. I had a good feeling about the bayside of our camping spot and the sun had just set. It wasn’t even a minute after hitting the water we were hooked into another fish. This time, it was a beautiful backwater queen of hearts as I like to say, Snook. Once getting her in and measured (she was just over 37”) the opportunity to see that beautiful fish swim away, in what was barely enough water to hold her, was incredible. She was laying up on a bank that was less than a foot deep. We’ll See You out there!
