Flounder Tips and Tactics

13 month old Avery Maia loves flounder. She and her dad Jeremy got this beauty.
Paul Lail got this nice flounder in Corpus Christi Tx.

Hey there all my fisherman and fisherwoman. I hope that you are having a wonderful month since we spoke last. The wind has been horrendous and has not let up one bit. I had the pleasure of getting out on the water the other night, had maybe a five hour window to see what we could find before the northerner hit us. All of my channel spots were so bad that we were in five inches of water and could not see anything, then again the tide was also completely slack and there was no movement which did not help visibility.

I would say the only area I was able to see any fish at all was way back in a cove off of the main channel. Close enough to find some flounder still but not so close that the murkiness would stop our visibility. We got ourselves a few fish and most were right on some sort of a ledge or drop off, even if only a foot difference in depth. Very surprisingly some of these fish were in the twenty inch range, most though were still just barely keepers which we let go or they were seventeen and we decided to gig them. I cannot say with for sure certainty that they are back yet, but are definitely being found more than they were in January.

Whether you like to throw live bait or lures you can still find the flounder at access points and channels that are passage ways to the gulf since they are not yet migrating back in to the marshes. Mullet and mud minnows would be perfect bait right now, just work your baits very slow. I like to target rocks and walls at this time of year. One thing that I learned this season was that the flounder do not all leave there are stragglers and fish that you can find if you look hard enough. I like to keep a log book of all of the variables that led me to catch or gig my fish, this way when it is the same type of conditions I can remember where I had to go to find them.

Remember that if you have any questions or just need a helpful tip just email me and I will do whatever I can to assist you. I hope you have some great fishing adventures this month and get ready for the spring run.
