March is here, meaning the Winter trends are coming to an end. The water temperature will start slowly rising, really triggering these fish to feed. The tides will start to become stronger and fish will be on the move. March is a great month to fish. The weather is beautiful and these fish are hungry.
The redfish and trout bite will be hot. You can find these fish at the mouth of the creeks and moving out into the flats. Look for rocks and grass. Sea trout and redfish are big eaters, meaning they can be caught on a wide variety of bait. Sea Trout are commonly caught with popping corks and live shrimp, since they typically feed in the upper half of the water column. I’ve also had success with a 1/8-ounce jig head paired with a soft plastic.
Redfish are one of my favorites and really put up a good fight. In March, when targeting big redfish, I like to use live pinfish, but cut bait, soft plastics and the old faithful MirrOdine will also do the trick. Regardless of what inshore species you are targeting, one of the biggest factors of catching these fish is moving water. Tidal water movement is key to getting the bait stirred up and triggering feeding cycles.
