Homosassa Fishing Report: Nov 2013

Captain Cephas Christian has really been tearing up the grouper as of late. And said, it won’t do nothing but get better until the season closes.

Folks ask me all the time, “when is your favorite time to trout fish?” Spring and Fall. My response is always the same. And right now with the pre-winter fall season, I focus on the new moon of November. I will be at my best trout spots on or around these dates. Trout, and many other fish for that matter, are sensing the water temperature change and will be fattening up for the upcoming winter. One reason, among others, is that they will go lethargic during real cold water times. Remember, they are cold blooded creatures that don’t have a built in thermostat like us. Their body temperature is the same as their surroundings. Doesn’t mean they don’t eat, just that they don’t eat near as much. They don’t burn energy, they don’t need energy, etc. So, with that being said, now is the best time to target the many inshore and near shore fish. Everything: Trout, reds, mackerel, sea bass, cobia, bluefish, and yes, in our area, snook. This type of fall fishing is some of my personal favorite. With the cooling water temperatures, light breezes, and low humidity, it can make for a beautiful day on the water. If the floating grass isn’t bad, utilize your suspending twitch baits, or topwater plugs. If the floating grass is bad, which it has been lately, use your popping corks under a jig or just a jig and plastic for best results.

Don’t forget, right now is the time to book your, Swim with the Manatees Trip. If you’ve done it, I know you want to do it again. If you haven’t, well it should be on everybody’s bucket list. Plain and simply put, this will be the most awesome three hour trip you’ll ever encounter. To interact and pet these 1200 lb. vegetarian mammals is incredible. Right here in Homosassa and Crystal River is the only place left on the planet where you can still do this legally. Anywhere else can be a major fine. is area, being the home to two large manatee sanctuaries, we are still allowed to do it. Give me a holler. It’ll be an experience you won’t soon forget.

Be safe, and good fishing, on the nature coast ……….><> Capt. Rick
