FWC BEGINS REMOVAL OF TREE STANDS WITHIN THREE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS.
JANUARY 5, 2016 | FWC: CAROL LYN PARRISH
The recent deer hunting season has come to a close on three popular wildlife management areas in south Florida, and in January the FWC will begin the process of removing abandoned tree stands within the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor, Rotenberger and Holey Land WMAs. These areas are, in whole or part, in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade counties.
Removal will begin in early January and continue throughout the month. Notices will be affixed to tree stands, and stands will be removed six days after this notification. However, some stands may be removed without notice.
Tree stand owners are encouraged to remove stands after hunting season ends, since abandoned tree stands present safety hazards and littler Florida’s public lands. Specific WMA regulations require that tree stands used during the season must be removed after the season ends. All tree stands left in these WMAs outside of the allowed period will be removed and subject to disposal.
The FWC will removed and store the tree stands at an approved facility for 90 days prior to disposal while the FWC attempts to contact the owners.
“Our members handed our information at check stations during hunting season, reminding the public of the rules, so everyone should be well informed. We want to make sure that the owners have every opportunity to either remove their stands from the WMAs, or come pick them up from us after we removed them,” said Maj. Camille Soverel, FWC Law Enforcement Regional Commander.
Owners of tree stands in the advised areas can contact the FWC at its South Regional Office at 561-625-5122 to check if their tree stand has been removed. The GPS and/or location and description of the tree stand will be needed when calling.
NAUTICAL VENTURES GROUP BUYS FISHING RADIO SHOW
JANUARY 6, 2016
After a 10-year run on CBS-owned South Florida radio station WQAM, the Weekly Fisherman Show has a new home and a new owner with Nautical Ventures Group.
Nautical Ventures acquired the rights to the show after its longtime hosts, radio disc jockey Eric Brandon and Sun Sentinel outdoors writer Steve Waters, approached NVG CEO Roger Moore with the idea.
A longtime listener and sponsor of the show, Moore saw an opportunity and quickly embraced the idea.
“I’ve been a steady listener of the show and have witnessed its listening audience grow over the years,” Moore, an avid boater, fisherman and occasional guest, said in a statement.
“Simply put, it’s the go-to show for fishermen who want the intel on what’s biting and where they’re biting from Stuart to the Keys.”
The show’s two-hour format consists of live call-ins by celebrity captains who share their local fishing knowledge on what should be biting for the next several days and how to catch those fish.
Between captains, listeners call in to quiz the hosts on tips, techniques and hot spots. In the 10 years the show has aired, it has never missed a broadcast.
“We have plans to expand the show to include fishing experts from other platforms, experts in related fields and guest speakers from the industry — all designed to entertain, engage and educate our listening audience,” said Brandon, a former Magic 102 and KISS country DJ, who will continue to co-host the show. “An example of this is the addition of kayak fishing guru Joe Hector, who will call in a kayak fishing segment every week.”
The show also will have a new broadcast home — 940 WINZ, Miami’s Sports Station, an iHeartRadio network.
“Upon learning that our CBS contract was up for review, other networks came calling,” said Waters, the Sun Sentinel’s outdoor writer. “The opportunity to join the all-star lineup on a major sports station like WINZ was a natural fit.”
The inaugural show is slated for Jan. 16 in its usual time slot of 6-8 a.m.
FLORIDA BILL COULD RESTRICT BOAT INSPECTIONS
JANUARY 5, 2016
A Florida state lawmaker introduced legislation that would require officials to have probable cause before searching boats. Rep. Ritch Workman, R-Melbourne, said he is tired of having his boat boarded by state and federal authorities who are searching for violations.
If the proposed law, House Bill 703, passes, it would take effect July 1 and apply to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, county deputies and municipal police officers.
The proposal would revise state law relating to reckless or careless operation of a vessel; delete provisions authorizing law enforcement boat inspections; and revise the authority of law enforcement officers to conduct certain investigations.
“Me and my friends get pulled over all the time, and it’s never because we’re doing something wrong,” Workman told Florida Today.
Workman said he does not want to keep law enforcement officers from doing their job, but he wants stops on state waters to be more reasonable. He said he will work with the FWC as the legislation is developed.
A safe-boating sticker next to the boat’s registration could help signal that a boat has been inspected, he said.
“You’ve stolen time from my family and nobody has asked you, in my opinion, to be the safety police,” Workman said of such scenarios. “I don’t need anybody else nannying my children. I got it.”
Since 2013, FWC warnings for boating violations have doubled in Brevard County, increasing to 2,464 in 2015 as citations dropped by almost a third, to 340. FWC officers wrote 488 citations and 1,101 warnings in 2013.
Under state law FWC officers can conduct boating safety inspections and marine fisheries inspections “when it is apparent that the boat occupants have engaged in highly regulated activities, such as fishing or hunting,” said Rob Klepper, a spokesman for the FWC’s law enforcement division.
“FWC does not comment on proposed legislation,” he said. If you’re interested in seeing this legislation moving forward towards passage, contact your local FL legislature.
