Joyce’s light tackle battle with a 42″ Redfish

caught this 42″ Redfish in St. Augustine – nearshore.

Went out with the hubby on Dec. 2nd to explore a new spot near the St. Augustine coastline and just after he said, “if we don’t get a substantial bite in 5 minutes, we’re leaving”, my rod bent over – taking me almost overboard as I held on tightly. My line was buzzing like crazy and there was no way I could adjust the drag as I was struggling with both hands to not lose my Shakespeare Ladyfish & reel. What a fight! Thankfully my husband and son were there to get the 42″ Redfish on my lap for a quick picture as both the fish and I were worn out. I was using a 20 lb. braid with 15 lb. leader and prayed the whole time my little rod didn’t break during the back and forth tug of war that lasted slightly over 10 minutes. The Redfish weighed in at 22 lbs.

Funny that on the way to St. Augustine I was looking at a picture of a Bull Redfish in the December edition of the magazine and saying, “one day I’m gonna catch one bigger!” My wish came true a lot sooner than I expected. I’m a proud and very excited angler to share my biggest catch ever with Coastal Angler Magazine… I’m HOOKED!
