Katch Me if You Can

T hat’s what Sean McDonald was saying on Sunday after the last boats arrived for the final weigh in at the 2013 Ludington Offshore Classic sports fishing tournament. The Classic is the largest freshwater salmon tournament in the U.S. Participants come from all over the midwest and as far away as Florida and Ontario looking for the perfect catch and this week- end didn’t disappoint. Record numbers of 20 pound plus fish were weighed in this year, with 29.5 taking the Big Fish contest.

But the coveted prize in the Pro division was taken by team Katch Me, captained by Sean McDonald, (a monthly contributor to The Angler Magazine and Ludington/ Scottsville resident) and his team of Jeff Eck, Jason Forward, Dennis Moore, Joe Tuomikoski, and James Vlasicak.

Sean and his team posted a respectable box on Saturday of 119 pounds to put themselves in contention at 11th place. But a monster box on Sunday vaulted them in to first with the largest catch of the tournament of over 160 pounds with 12 fish in the box. Their largest fish weighed in just under 26 pounds on Sunday, but they also boated 3 more 20 plus pounders that helped them leap frog 10 spots to take home the $8000 first place prize and bragging rights.

Sean is a Captain and guide for both offshore and inland river fly fishing in Ludington. He became only the second captain from Ludington to win the Ludington classic.
