A California kayak fisherman had a frighteningly close encounter with a great white shark on Sunday, October 25, while fishing off Half Moon Bay.
David Slavich was about 1.5 miles offshore when the shark surfaced just feet from his 12.5-foot kayak. Despite an earlier warning about a nearby shark, Slavich was caught off guard by the predator’s sudden appearance.
The shark swam alongside the kayak before eventually moving away. Slavich escaped unharmed, and video of the encounter captured the remarkable close call.
The incident is a reminder for anglers to stay alert when fishing offshore, especially in waters known for great white shark activity.
