Kayak Fishing

By: Eric Henson

September is not only my B-Day month but, it just so happens to be one of my favorite months of the year to fish.  There is an absolute plethora of bait in the water between white bait, shrimp, mullet, crabs, and a lot of different species that will be starting to pile in the bay to feed on the smorgasbord of food. Since I specialize in using artificial lures and flies, this gives me the opportunity to use lots of different artificial baits. The main species I like to target would be first redfish because upper and over slot reds will begin grouping up in large numbers. Nothing gets the heart beating more than seeing a school of reds the size of a football field coming at you while the water turns red as they get closer and closer to make that first cast. My second choice would have to be snook. While they start pouring in off the beaches from spawning all summer, they will be looking to get fattened up before the cooler months roll in. It is a great time of year to catch them just about anywhere in the bay. And my last but not least choice would be tarpon. The season to catch lots of them will be dwindling down soon so it’s a catch them while you can motto. Their hard runs and acrobatic jumps are hard to get enough of so I try and get my fill as much as possible now while I still can. Be sure to investigate the waters around you wherever you decide to fish to match your baits accordingly. And if you aren’t seeing much bait then it’s time to move to another spot until you do because the fish will always be close behind the food source. Hope you all enjoy this month of fishing as much as I do! Tight lines and Tight knots to everyone.
