October is truly an ideal month for anglers to come and experience kayak fishing in Southwest Florida. With the fall season bringing in cooler temperatures, the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the bays become more active. Migratory species like spanish mackerel, redfish, and snook begin to move inshore as baitfish schools return from the summer heat. This means it is an ideal month to target an array of different species without having to travel too far off the shallow flats and mangrove lined areas.
The changing season also impacts the behavior of fish, with many species feeding aggressively in preparation for the winter months. Redfish are particularly active, forming large schools, often found tailing in the shallow flats, hence the reason I always call this month, “The Hunt for Red October”. Snook, which thrive in the warm months, start to migrate out of their summer breeding grounds, becoming more concentrated in the deeper cuts and passes, creating great opportunities for kayak anglers to target them with live bait or artificial lures.
October’s mild weather is also a welcomed break from the intense summer heat, which makes long hours on the water much more enjoyable! Whether you are a seasoned angler or new to kayak fishing, Southwest Florida’s fall season offers an unforgettable experience. Also remember to please do your part in helping to keep our waters clean!
