Keaton Beach Forecast: Sept 2013

Whew….it finally quit raining long enough to go out thereand find out the trout are o.k. and biting just great. Several folks limited out over the last weekend (today is 8/14/13). Without really trying, Billy Pillow and I caught a limit of trout just casting out a live pinfish under a Back Bay. We popped it once, put the rod in the holder, and let the bait swing around the corner as we were catching pinfish for an offshore trip. In under three and a half hours we had caught 12. We lost one to a huge (160 – 170 lb) class tarpon which came up like we were watching in slow motion 40 feet from the boat and inhaled, or tried to, my 3.5lb trout. It was thrashing on the surface and then leapt out of the water, breaking the leader, and losing the trout. Minutes later, we landed and chased the trout again! Whew, where is the dang camera crew when these things hap- pen! Out with old Blair I suppose…

Anyway, we caught some fine trout up to 20” and had too many to count that ended up being caught and released. I suspect September to carry this fine bite through the month, and as the dark water conditions continue, fishing will persist through September. Although we have seen a lot of rain, you can simply move along until you find the right color water. You should have no problem finding trout ready to eat.

Our water temps in the Gulf are an astounding 90+ degrees. The trout don’t care and are eating anyway. Folks were telling me they had to go in 10+ feet of water to catch a trout! Yikes! Billy and I caught ours in 7.5 feet drifting back to 5’ and had no problem getting our limit. If you are one of those people who can’t catch a trout without slinging a piece of that Gulp, you may HAVE to go out to 12 feet of water to trick a trout. Me? I will give them what they want: a live pinfish…under a loud Back Bay Thunder!
Fish incoming tides on days with a breeze to get your trout in September.

Let’s Go Fishing!
