Lake Lanier Forecast: Sept 2013

Striper fishing on Lake Lanier has been very good the last few weeks. The stripers have been on the downline on the south end of the lake. The biggest question for the month of September is going to be the weather. How hot the weather is the next few weeks will really dictate the pattern on Lanier. The weather has been unseasonably cool so far.

If the weather continues to be cooler than normal, look for stripers to possibly start schooling on topwater. This normally happens in October, but we may jump a month ahead if the current weather pattern holds true. Be sure to have several casting rods ready with Sebile Magic Swimmers and Cordell Redfins. The Sebile Magic Swimmer is a jointed swimbait that works best most of the time with a steady retrieve. The lure will do all the work. The Redfin is a topwater wakebait, meaning it slowly makes a v-wake across the surface with a steady retrieve. Same as the Magic Swimmer, let the lure do all the work. The stripers will crush these two baits. If the weather finally turns scorching hot, look for the summer downline pattern to hold strong. The best fishing will be on the south end of the lake. The downline bite is simply a 1 ½-ounce sinker tied above a 5-foot leader with a live herring attached at the end of the leader. The important part is the details. Use a small hook like the 2/0 Gamakatsu Nautilus Light circle hook. The small hook allows the bait to swim more freely. Also be sure to use a light fluorocarbon leader like the 12-pound 100% Berkley Fluorocarbon. Lastly, be sure to take great care with your bait. For the next several weeks, be sure to keep ice in the livewell to keep the baits from getting stressed. If your bait is not in good shape, you will be fishing not catching. See you on the lake.
