Lake Lanier Spotted Bass Fishing Report: Dec 2013

by Capt. Ryan Coleman

Fishing is very good. The lake is now 6 inches below full pool and the surface temps are in the low 60’s. Most of the lake has turned over but there are some signs of it in various areas on the lower end. This should be done by the first week of December.

Fishing has been excellent up shallow on Lanier with most of the big fish being in less than 15 feet. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits have been excellent in the first part of the mornings up on rocky points on the main lake. The fish are roaming the shallow rock until the sun gets on it then moving out to 15- 20 feet of water off the points. Early, I have been using a 10 or 15 foot, diving crankbait on rocky points during calmer days and a white double willow leaf Mini-Me spinnerbait on days when the wind is blowing. This pattern should hold all the way till Christmas if the temperatures stay normal.

Later in the day, work a 3/8oz SpotSticker hand tied casting jig in brown or Green Craw on the same points in 15-20 feet of water. If the fish will not eat the jig, toss a 3/16oz SpotSticker stand up head with a Zoom swamp crawler in green pumpkin on the same points. The will eat one of the two.

On very sunny, warm days, work a Megabass Vision 110 over brush in 20-25 feet of water in a stop and pause retrieve to bring up some very big spots in December. This is a very good technique for the bigger fish until the water gets very cold and they go deep in the timber. Good luck out there.
