Late summer continues to deliver excellent salmon fishing on Lake Michigan, with anglers finding consistent action for Chinook salmon along several popular ports. According to the latest fishing reports from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, anglers trolling offshore are enjoying productive outings as mature fish continue feeding aggressively.
Communities including Manistee, Ludington, Frankfort, and Onekama have all reported steady catches of Chinook salmon, with many boats also landing coho salmon, lake trout, and the occasional steelhead. While fishing success can vary with weather conditions and water temperatures, many captains say the early morning and evening hours have been the most productive during the summer heat.
As August progresses, baitfish remain abundant throughout much of Lake Michigan, providing ideal feeding opportunities for salmon. Many anglers are targeting suspended fish over deeper water using downriggers, divers, and copper or lead-core presentations to reach the preferred depths where cooler water temperatures are holding fish.
Successful lure selections continue to include a variety of spoons, flashers paired with flies, and meat rigs, with colors changing daily depending on water clarity and available forage. Local anglers recommend paying close attention to temperature breaks and bait concentrations, as these areas often hold active schools of salmon throughout the day.
In addition to Chinook salmon, lake trout fishing has remained consistent in deeper water, while steelhead continue to provide exciting action for anglers willing to cover water offshore. Coho salmon are also being caught in mixed bags, giving anglers the opportunity to target several popular Great Lakes species during a single trip.
