The bass and crappie are spawning! The water level is still a little higher than normal for this time of year which made it somewhat difficult locating fish but once you find a pattern you can pretty much stick with it until the first really cold snap comes into play for the bass. That cold weather should drive the crappie bite even better. If you’re crappie fishing, using minnows trolling along the grass edges has been producing as well as the edge of the river. If you’re jigging, stick with the grass edges and look for thicker clumpier grass areas that will offer more cover. The water clarity has varied ranging from really stained on the east side to stained/tanicky-clearer water in other parts so match your lures accordingly.
Lures for bass fishing that have been producing are slow-rolling spinner baits on the outside grass edges getting that reaction bite as they still feed on small threadfin shad, flipping/pitching creature-styles lures into thicker isolated grass clumps, frogs, swim jigs/baits and some top water action worked real slow. Colors that have been working are white; June bug; red shad; Okeechobee craw; black/blue and green pumpkin/gold flake.
Areas to try on the south-end for crappie can be around Normans channel; kreamer/rita island; parts of pelican bay and some of the dynamite holes; uncle joe’s and parts of Observation shoal. On the north-end the back part of the monkey box, around the spoil islands by Dupree bar and inside bird island in places, around Harney pond, tip of horse island and parts of tin house and kings bar.
