Boca Granda Pass, Charlotte Harbor, and the Flats Report & Forecast

By Capt. Dave Stephens

As we get into the heart of Spring, we have a lot going on here in Charlotte Harbor. With the cold fronts no longer pushing southward, water temperatures are warming. We are getting into some really good snook fishing. For the anglers who like to take a few fish home for dinner?
The Mangrove Snapper have been moving into the harbor. Fish areas with deeper water with good current flow, and a little cover also helps.
Another fish that migrates through Charlotte Harbor that is often overlooked is the Spanish Mackerel. These guys are excellent on the grill; the only downside is that they do not freeze well. So, I recommend just getting what you want for dinner that evening.
If you are looking for a fight? Well, we have some large schools of Jacks roaming around, eating anything in their path. Pound for pound, these guys are the toughest around.
The local sand bars that have oysters or grass will be holding Sea Trout. Another place to locate Trout is off mangrove points with good current.
Warmer waters should also start ushering in some Tarpon. Normally, the river mouths and the holes in the harbor are some of the first areas where these fish show themselves. Typically, an early calm morning is the best time to locate these guys. The biggest issue during the spring in Charlotte Harbor is figuring out what to fish for. So, you might have to just make multiple trips out on the water.
