There are three things to look at when buying that new fishing rod, length, power, and action. I find the best all-around length when fishing mangroves is a seven-foot rod. Some rods I call specialty rods, like a seven-foot six inch I use for fishing the flats where I want to cover a lot of water with a top water plug. A six-foot six inch is nice for fishing in tight quarters when you want to flip a jig under an overhang. But for all around fishing, chose that seven-foot rod.
Let’s now talk about actions. There are four actions and we won’t bother with slow action rods.
Extra fast, fast, and medium. Extra fast action will bend from the tip down about four inches and then transfers the weight down to the back bone of the rod. Fast action will bend more and medium even more, about a third of the way down. The slower the action, the harder it is to set the hook. The action will influence how sensitive the tip is and how far it will cast.
Powers are the back bone of the rod. Heavy, med-heavy, medium, med-light, and light. The bigger the fish the heavier the power you want. I use the med-heavy rods with a fast action.
