From the Locks to the Rocks: September 2015

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]eptember is a turning point on the river. The water begins to cool and although the temps are coming down the daytime fishing will heat up. The bite will continue to be strong at night. For the big cats, try cut eels and live minnows, as well as live bream, using a Carolina rig set-up with a cork on the leader line to the hook. Lots of folks have been using squid in the river with great success this summer. The fish should bite better late evenings and through the night. Always look for deep holes in the river, the fish are always using them either for food or shelter or cooler or warmer water.

Crappie will continue to be great, with bigger fish being caught on minnows and jigs this month. As always the brush piles and downed trees in the river are key fish attractors. Bream fishing will also improve during the daytime this month. They will readily attack live bait such as crickets, red worms, wax worms, etc. Also, the beetle spin action should get hot. Watch out for structure sticking out of the river such as trees, bridge pilings, rubbish, etc. Bream like to hang around those areas!

Largemouth bass fishing will improve as the water cools this month. jumbo minnows, crawdads, soft plastics and crank baits will attract most of the larger ones. Small bass love night crawlers, and this is a great way to teach your kids how to catch them. Topwater baits, buzz baits, and spooks, will also work well this month.
