Upper Pere Marquette Fishing Report: April 2014

fishing

Steelhead fishing on the Pere Marquette has been good. Right now it’s kind of like the weather, on again, off again. We still have a lot of snow up here and with warmer weather ahead, the river will come up. Its only a matter of when and for how long. You can check out my weekly fish report, (outfittersnorth.com) for an up-to-date outlook on the water levels. If the river comes up please be safe out there.

The majority of the steelhead right now are fall, winter fish. We are starting to see more and more spring fish since the last little bump of run off we had. For flies try bigger eggs in brighter colors if the water is high, also big fry patterns and leech imitations will start to get looks as well. With clear water try smaller eggs in more natural colors. Stone Flies and Hex Nymphs will also produce. Swinging flies, big and flashy will produce with the higher, dirtier water. Leech imitations in black or purple with some gold or copper flash. With low, clear water try more natural baitfish imitations in olive or tan. Good luck!
