The lower Pere Marquette has had some great days in the last month with the large amounts of rain. The steelhead are passing by on their way upstream and which means you can have great fishing one day and slow the next. The recent cold temperatures and dropping water levels should now keep the fish in the lower area of the river until it ices up around the first of the year.
Overall the PM has had a great fall steelhead fishery, and we will have above average winter fishing for the steelhead that do not drop back into Pere Marquette Lake and Lake Michigan. The highlight of this fall has been the size of the average fish is much larger than in past years. Just recently, an angler caught a 17 pound steelhead near Indian Bridge.
Flies and spawn under bobbers is the most productive way to fish in the lower river because of the amount of logs and snags on the bottom. Swinging Streamer Patterns with a short sink tip fly line is another way to catch them at this time of the year. Plug and Spinner anglers also will catch a good amount of fish all fall. Its been easier now that the leaves are down. Pressure is light with deer season going on and many have hung up their rods until the first warm up in the spring. It is a great time to be on the river and this is a good year to get out and do some steelhead fishing.
