Lure of Florida Fishing

[dropcap]I[/dropcap] recently had a chance to visit The Lure of Florida Fishing exhibit at the Museum of Florida History. The museum will be hosting this exhibit until August 26, 2014. I was able to attend an early press event on March 13. The exhibit displays over 150 artifacts ranging from the early 19th century until present day. The display itself is worthy of a trip into downtown Tallahassee, especially if you are a fishing history buff or collector. I will have to admit the fishing exhibit was exciting, but the museum itself is spectacular. I am a long time north Florida resident, and the Museum of Florida History escaped me. I am a big fan of Florida History, and I am not sure how I have never connected with such a hidden gem.

The museum is set up as a timeline of Florida. As you enter, you will be taken on a journey through Florida’s unique history. The greatest part of the museum for me was that Florida history is rooted in water and coastal exploration. I was fascinated by the amazing collection of ship wreckage and artifacts from all over the state. This is the best collection of Florida history gathered in a single museum. It goes without saying the Museum of Florida History is the states crown jewel of collectibles.

As an outdoor writer and fishing guide, the museum gave me a fresh perspective on our state and its coastal history. As a fishing guide, it is important to have all the historical pieces of the puzzle in the correct order, as we are the ambassadors to the Fishing Capital of the World.

As recreational fisherman, folks should experience both The Lure of Fishing exhibit, but also take time to enjoy the entire museum. I believe you will find your love of the water and fishing inside. The museum is a great place to spend a few hours, and an amazing place for family. This is not your average museum. There are plenty of hands on, for both kids and adults. Including an interactive fishing station to catch and compete for big fish honors. Come visit downtown Tallahassee this summer. Take a walk, find lunch, and enjoy a day of history. While you’re here, take the time to find a local fishing guide, and explore the Big Bend. Sounds like a great summer adventure awaits!
