According to the American Cancer Society:

• In 2016, approximately 76,380 new melanomas will be diagnosed (about 46,870 in men and 29,510 in women).

• In 2016, approximately 10,130 people are expected to die of melanoma (about 6,750 men and 3,380 women).

• Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined.

• One person dies of melanoma every hour (every 57 minutes).

• The vast majority of mutations found in melanoma are caused by ultraviolet radiation.

• On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns

Boaters and avid fisherman are particularly vulnerable to skin cancer due to their frequent direct exposures to the sun, reflections from the water, reflections from white surfaces and reflections from glass on the boat. In order to protect yourself from sun exposure, the American Cancer Society recommends the use of sunscreen, long pants and sleeves and wide-brim hats.

The other protection they recommend is shade. Sunshades are a great way to protect yourself from ultraviolet rays from the sun. Canvas Designers can manufacture a custom-made sunshade for your boat using Sunbrella® marine fabric.

Sunbrella® fabrics are perfect for awnings, shade applications, marine tops and covers. These fabrics are durable, even in the harshest environments. They are breathable and won’t retain moisture, eliminating mildew. They are available in many colors and styles.

The best thing about Sunbrella® is it carries the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, giving your family and friends the extra protection they need. Not only will our sunshades protect you, they will make your boat look great!

Our sunfly poles are available in both 316L stainless steel and carbon fiber. These poles will hold the tension of the sunshade for mile after nautical mile. The grade 316L is preferred because of its strength, corrosion resistance and ability to hold shape and operate at high temperatures. The advantage of carbon fiber is its versatility, strength and durability. It is 70 percent lighter than steel, has high strength to weight ratio and is highly resistant to corrosion. Carbon fiber is more costly than stainless steel.

So beat the heat and consider a custom-made sunshade for added protection against skin cancer. Our sunshade designs are patterned specifically for the year, make and model of your boat.
