Sometimes what’s old can become new again. That is the case with the new Marshview Marina in Murrells Inlet, S.C. The site in which Marshview Marina is located has a long and storied past with many folks referring to this location as Voyager’s View, which was the name of the restaurant that occupied the site for 20 years. But the history of this location goes back much further than that.

Go back to the mid 1970s, and you would see Barry Schoch and JB Orr at the Inlet Port Marina, as it was known then. Tom Swatzel, who contributed the historical background information for this article, ran a charter boat called the Catch 22 out of there in 1979. The boat was owned by Barry Schoch and Marshall Beam. They had a boat ramp there back then, and Inlet Port was a popular gathering spot especially when Tom and the other charter captains offloaded their catches.

Around 1986, Inlet Port Marina was sold to Billy and Cotton Player, their vision was to not only have a marina at the location but to also serve the public with a restaurant there as well. And so the Voyager’s View Restaurant was born. Billy and Cotton’s idea became reality when the towering three-story structure was built and became very popular with tourists and locals alike. The site became the homeport of South Carolina’s first casino boat back in 1998. Several factors converged to make that a short-lived attraction. The narrow channel leading into the marina made maneuvering difficult, also state and county litigation became involved, then there was the famous news conference held at the Murrells Inlet Public Boat Ramp by former Gov. David Beasely in which he vowed to end the presence of the casino boat.

The Voyager’s View continued its run until the early 2000s, when the players sold the property to a Mr. Ownby who in turn sold the property to Larry Elliot in 2005. The current owners of the property purchased it from Mr. Elliot earlier this year and renamed it the Marshview Marina, which also serves as the home of Murrells Inlet Bait & Tackle and Murrells Inlet Boat Rentals.

The Marshview Marina has a lot to offer its customers with their full service bait and tackle shop and boat, kayak and paddleboard rentals. A one-stop shop for anyone planning a fun day on the water is what the new owners have in mind, with ice, drinks and snacks available as well. The Marshview Marina is also providing sunset cruises through beautiful Murrells Inlet, which is sure to be a wonderful time for friends and family alike. With all this, the Marshview Marina is sure to continue the tradition of creating happiness and making memories for generations to come.
