Early Bird gets the worm! Dan with a nice 31″ Snook caught on a live finger mullet using a Quantum Merrit 5000 combo.
October is always a great month on the Treasure Coast for inshore fishing. This month is well known for our annual mullet migration, also known as the mullet run! Fishing live finger mullet or larger live mullet is a great way to catch larger snook and tarpon this time of year. Expect some big jack crevalle, goliath groupers, snapper, redfish, and seatrout mixed in. Fishing points, seawalls, docks and channel edges will yield the bites. Pin a finger mullet to the bottom around structure and a sandy bottom for redfish, flounder and snapper.
Nearshore action is awesome this month. Local beaches all along the Treasure Coast are great places to target snook and big tarpon, with the occasional shark, while walking the beach and casting artificial baits. What more can an avid angler ask for?! Again, find large bait schools of mullet around sunrise and sunset for best action and work the outside edges of those bait schools. Cast, catch, release, repeat! Also this month can be a good time to start looking for the first waves of Spanish mackerel to show up along local nearshore reefs just offshore of the beaches. Cast a shiny lure reel in at a fast retrieve, and hold on!
