Capt. Tony Gonzalez Rockport Fishing Report

May is the Month to Fish

Hello anglers, May is upon us and is one of favorite months to fish. We start that summer pattern where the winds finally lay down and we start to have a more consistent southerly blow. I’ll start fishing the harder sand  bottoms targeting the tide runner trout over potholes and drop offs. The bait stands will start flying that yellow croaker flag, which gets my clients psyched for chasing big trout and summer is upon us.  Tournament season gets going with one almost every weekend down here in south Texas, which are alot of fun especially the women’s tournaments. That’s something I want to touch on for second.

I spoke to several people at the 42nd annual Houston Fishing that didn’t know about all the women’s tournaments that are hosted down here on Aransas Bay. The biggest of course being the Babes on Bay out of Rockport/Fulton, last year having over 300 teams with more than 1000 lady anglers. There is also the Saltwater Sweeties put on by Rudy’s Redfish that is growing in popularity and the Babes on Baffin which is a CCA endorsed tournament that’s also a growing event.

If you have never been to one of these events then you’re missing out! The ladies have a lot fun with these events they come up with some crazy team names and funny costumes, that they win prizes for. If you interested in these events but aren’t the greatest anglers, no worries. They have different categories; professional guided artificial or bait, non professional guided artificial or bait. So gals grab your friends, hire a guide or bring your son or husband and come and enjoy the many tournaments designed for y’all. Only one Y chromosome per boat.
